Last minute thoughts on Bama vs. Michigan

Well, good morning folks. Had a great night last night at the Braves game with Kate and the boys. Would like to give a little shout out to our son Coop for his first complete game! No, he didn't pitch at six months of age, but he did actually make it through the entire game (much to the delight of big brother). Even though the Braves didn't pull it out, it was still a good night at the Ted.

Now, with the season starting for most college football teams today I've been doing some thinking. Mostly about things that most of us as fans don't like to think about....injuries. With that said, here are some of my last minute thoughts on Bama and Michigan.

1. Don't get hurt A.J. McCarron! Not like he can control this one much, but since A.J. has matured he has become if nothing else, a dependable QB and a gritty leader. So I asked myself...what if A.J. were to go down? Well, you may not like the answer but our offensive hopes would reside squarely on the shoulders of a redshirt freshman. The last game that Phillip Ely saw action in was his senior year of high school in the Florida State Championship game.

2. Loose shoelaces can never be good! As Bama controls the senior Michigan QB, so goes the game. Bama has a young defense and Denard Robinson is bound to have some big plays. How will they respond? The maturity (or lack thereof) of this defense will tell us a lot about what the rest of the season will look like for Bama and what the outcome of this game will be.  This young defense will have to play at a level of maturity that some of them have never played at before.  If they do not stick to their assignments, with Shoelace in the backfield, it could be a long day.

3. Can Eddie Lacy overcome the injuries that he's had to his toe/ ankle to be as productive as most believe he is capable of and will he make an impact tonight?

4. Bama's offensive line.  There is no doubt that Bama has probably the best offensive line in college football. The only thing you can question is where are they when it comes to conditioning. Since Coach Saban has arrived at Bama, that hasn't been a problem but I'm guessing that Michigan is probably going to be ready physically also.  Can the offensive line of Bama wear down the defensive front of Michigan to let that Bama ground game dominate late in the game?

Interesting stats:
First year of Football: Michigan- 1879  Bama- 1892
All time record: Michigan- 895-310-36  Bama- 814-320-43
Head to head- Michigan leads 2-1 (All three previous meetings have been in post season)
Bama Season Openers- 93-21-3 (.808) all time with Coach Saban going 13-3 all time (5-0 at Bama)

Prediction- I like Bama to take this one.  I think that Denard Robinson is going to see some defensive looks that he has never seen before and Bama's defense will be able to contain him enough that the Bama offensive line can wear down that Michigan front and take control of the game in the second half.  Bama 21- Michigan 10

2012 SEC Predictions (SEC East)

Well ladies and gents, since my graduate classes are occupying what little time I have, I haven't been able to get anything written for the blog.  I wanted to at least get out my predictions for how I see the SEC shaking out this season and then hopefully being able to follow this post up with my picks for week 1.  We'll start with the SEC East.  Well, this year...I don't even think that Mark Richt can screw this up for the Dawgs.  That's right UGA fans, I'm picking the Dawgs to win the SEC East.  The primary reason is because I feel that they have one of the easiest schedules in the SEC.  They don't play Bama, LSU or Arkansas this year with Auburn being their toughest challenge out of the West.  Here is the way I see it top to bottom:

1. Georgia
2. Florida
3. South Carolina
4. Missouri (a close 4th behind USC)
5. Vandy
6. Tennessee
7. Kentucky

The reason that I say that Mizzou is a close 4th behind South Carolina is because the best thing that the Gamecocks have going is their running game and the Old Ballcoach has proven time and time again that he doesn't know how to rely on a running game.  It's against his genetic makeup.  That's why I feel that Florida edges out South Carolina for 2nd and I see Mizzou beating the Gamecocks in Columbia because Spurrier won't give the rock to Lattimore enough and even though Mizzou doesn't have a defense to speak of, arguably the strength of that defense is their secondary and their offense is strong enough to keep them in the game.  As far as Florida and Georgia, most people know that I like Muschamp and I really think that this could be the year that he coaches these guys up and might pull off a miracle and win the East...but I'm not willing to put my money on that just yet.  Even though Florida is not playing Bama this year they have LSU and of course UGA and then that other team from north Florida, Florida State, who some people see challenging for the National Championship.  I think that is the difference between Florida and UGA is that Florida has a slightly harder schedule that UGA.  Florida's defense is going to have to score some points this year though cause their offense is not that great.  Once again this year, the SEC East is the weaker of the divisions and it could turn into a three team race if Mark pulls a Richt.  I'll be following up with the SEC West.

This Year's SEC Preview

Alrighty folks, I'm going to try and get my SEC preview posted here this week.  I'll be starting out with the SEC East and giving my take on that and then wrapping it up with the SEC West.  Hopefully we will have another couple of guys (Ralph and Mo) that are writing some articles for the blog by then and they can also pitch in with their picks for the year.  Stay tuned!

Penn State Sanctions

According to NCAA President Mark Emmert, Penn State built an "athletic culture that went horribly awry". As a result, the NCAA has levied the following punishment:
#1- $60 million fine with money to be used to establish an endowment to be used for the victims of child abuse and sexual abuse.
#2- 4 year bowl ban
#3- loss of ten more scholarships per year for 4 years(from 25 per year to 15)
#4- all wins by Penn State football program between 1998-2011 will be vacated.
#5- total of five years on probation
The NCAA also has reserved the right to levie punishment against any individual who might have had something to do with the violations.

The press conference is still ongoing. We will update as necessary.

No longer if the NCAA will sanction Penn State, but when

ESPN is reporting that tomorrow morning at 9:00am NCAA president Mark Emmert will announce sanctions against both Penn State and it's football program.

Paterno statue coming down

Reports coming out of Pennsylvania this morning are that the statue of Joe Paterno has been taken down from outside the stadium where the coaching giant lead the Nittany Lions for almost 46 years.  With the child abuse scandals that have streamed out of Penn State since last season, I have done a lot of thinking about how I would handle this as a fan of a University where it happened.  What if the names and place was different?  What if this would have been Bear Bryant and not Paterno involved in this?  Would it change the way I feel?  Well, my response is coming this week but I am curious of a couple of different things from our readers.  First, do you feel that the Joe Paterno statue should come down and why or why not?  Secondly, do you feel that the NCAA should impose any sanctions toward the football program at Penn State...why or why not?  Please post your comments to the blog so that others can read them and respond to them.  Let us know what you are thinking!

Anybody ready for some football? ROLL TIDE ROLL!!!!

Alright Ladies and Gents, I'm looking at trying to get the blog up and running before football season kicks off again!  I am still looking for some folks that might be willing to pitch in a write for the blog every once in awhile.  I'm especially looking for an Auburn fan and UGA fan that would be willing to add a little spice to things.  I'd like to have some more of the SEC represented too so if you are a fan of one of the other teams and want to jump in, let me know.  Don't worry if you've never done this before.  Heck, you don't have to be an expert or I wouldn't be doing it.  This is a blog written by normal sports fans that is read and appreciated by normal sports fans.  Look forward to hearing back from you if you want to join in as a guest blogger!  Just post a comment to this blog post or email me at scubajack4ua@gmail.com.
